It turned me into someone who no longer believes what 'they' tell me. 'They' being the Fda, Usda, and whatever else who I opinion had my health and well being in their best interest. What I believe now is that they have money as their best interest.

According to Websters Dictionary a genetically modified organism is "an organism whose genetic characteristics have been altered using the techniques of genetic engineering." It is believed that they are more tolerate to the toxins in their environment and that the toxins gift in the fish and the hormones that the fish were injected with to make them bigger, will end up in the consumers after ingesting the frankenfish. European researchers have found that the Gmo fish have a considerably greater effect on the natural environment when they get out of their confined place. AquaBounty has responded by saying they will insure that their fish are sterile. I personally don`t trust this. Look at the newest "accident" in the Gulf. All it takes is two fertile fish. I wonder what the impact would be on those 157 species of fish that rely on salmon as their source of food? If AquaBounty says they want to keep their fish contained in tanks to sell out the risk of getting out in the wild, then there`s the issue of what they`re fed. As it is now, raised salmon are fed pellets for food which is fully unnatural and not a biologically appropriate food. This results in the salmon not getting plankton which is responsible for their orange color, and is the conjecture the salmon is injected with color so the consumer will buy it. I don`t eat farmed fish; wild caught is on my plate, and this is one of the reasons. There are other worries but those are a few that are on the top of my head.
Aside from AquaBounty there are many other 'players' in the biotech field;Monsanto is on top of the food chain. The corporation started as a U.S. Based enterprise back in 1901 in Missouri. They are the world`s important producer of glyphosate, better known as "Roundup", as well as the leader in genetically altered seed. The genetically altered seed is a seed which is resistant to their herbicide "Roundup" meaning that the crop can be sprayed with the herbicide but the plant won`t die. It`s known as "Round-up ready". The plants that come from the seeds are also sterile which means that the farmer can`t collect seeds from the plant and use them for next year`s crop; they have to buy another set of seeds. The seeds are also patented, which means that if a seed from a neighboring non-Monsanto crop blows into a Monsanto seeded crop and takes root, Monsanto can sue for patent infringement. Unfortunately, there are reports that a lot of farmers have lost their farms due to this process. Monsanto also fathered rbgh, the bovine increase hormone which is used on some dairy farms and is used to stimulate the cows into producing more milk. The U.S. Is the only country that has allowed use of the hormone. The two things I mentioned, coupled with its enterprise strategies and licensing agreements are what brought Monsanto under investigation with the U.S. Justice department in 2009. The Monsanto enterprise is known for many more inventions and for having their hands involved in many things including: saccharin, introducing caffeine and vanillan to coke, sulfuric acid, plastics, Ddt, Agent Orange, Nutrasweet, and Pcb`s among others. They also have their hands in politics a have previous employees sitting in respective places.
I know Gmo`s are here to stay and I`m not a huge fan. I know there are advantages and I also think there are many disadvantages. I don`t think they`ve been studied long sufficient or passed the needed security tests without monetary intervention or ulterior motives. Since I am a realist and I do know that they`re here to stay I do hope that laws will turn and mandatory labeling will be a requirement. As laws stand now, this is not a requirement as it is in Europe. I would appreciate having the right to pick which type of food I would like to fuel my body with. Please educate yourselves and decree where you want to spend your money and what you want to feed yourselves and your children.
